Lighting for Bookworms: the Lumio Lamp

Lumio Book Light from The British Library

This nifty little lamp is a shapeshifter: when not in use it folds away neatly into the shape of a hardcover book. Its name is Lumio and it’s available (fittingly) from the British Library shop for £195.

Lumio’s cover comes in two choices of wood: walnut or maple. When not in use you could stash it on a shelf amongst your other books, or leave it casually on your bedside table. The lamp is portable, so unless you have it plugged in to charge there are no wires on display to give the game away! Personally I like it best when laid on its back like a real book, but if you need 360 degree lighting you can extend the lamp all the way around so that the wood panels touch (as in the image below).

The light source is bright enough to read by but also soft and warm enough to be used in the bedroom, so it would make a perfect bedside lamp. To turn it on, simply open the cover of the book: the ‘pages’ will fan out and the LED bulb illuminates automatically. It comes complete with magnetic wooden pegs for mounting and a nice leather strap so that you can hang it on the wall.

The technical stuff: Lumio contains a rechargeable lithium ion battery, which provides up to 8 hours of use when fully charged. The bulb brightness is 500 lumens. Lumio can also be turned on while it’s charging, so you’ll never need to be without it.
